Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli (PSB) : Another traditional Worcestershire crop that is becoming increasingly popular, due to its flavour and nutrition. New varieties have allowed us to grow PSB over a longer period than was previously the case. Delicious when served with pasta, a good tip when cooking is to stand the spears up in boiling water with the tender flower end not immersed but cooked by the steam. This means that the whole spear is evenly cooked.

We give the PSB seed to a local specialist plant raiser who delivers the plants to us over the 3 month planting period. Both wood pigeons and rabbits are very partial to the tender young plants so we have to be very vigilant to keep them at bay. When it comes to harvest time each plant can be picked weekly 6 or 7 times although new varieties are being bred that are meant to come ready all at once and can be picked in a single, efficient cut.

Harvest from early September to the end of April.
